A roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. It is the standard unit contractors and material manufacturers use to price and order roofing materials.
Why does pitch affect the roof area?
A steeper roof covers more surface area than the flat footprint underneath it. The pitch multiplier converts flat footprint into actual roof surface a contractor must cover.
Why do you add a waste factor?
Every roofing job wastes some material on cuts around penetrations, valleys, hips, and edges. Adding 10–15% ensures the crew does not run out of material mid-install.
