What a wind mitigation inspection is (and why it saves you money)

A wind mitigation inspection is a standardized inspection that documents the features on your home — mostly on the roof — that reduce hurricane damage risk. In Florida, carriers are required to give premium credits for those features. The report is the receipt.
The inspection follows a state form called the OIR-B1-1802. It asks about roof shape (hip roofs perform best), deck attachment (nail size and spacing), secondary water resistance, roof-to-wall connection (straps, clips, wraps), and opening protection.
A wind mitigation report can pay for itself in a single insurance renewal cycle. In many cases it pays for itself several times over.
